In a recent study published by the National Science Foundation, researchers reported findings that sent shock waves throughout the air purifying manufacturing industry. According to the study's results, products that use ionic air purifiers based on ozonolysis appeared to create high levels of ozone in the surrounding area that rivaled that of smog saturated areas such as Los Angeles, California.

Ionic air purifiers work by charging airborne particles and then attracting them to metal electrodes. While the system is touted as being highly effective in clearing the surrounding air of pollutants and allergens, according to their advocates, it is now recognized that they also emit small amounts of ozone as a byproduct during the ionization process.

While standard ionic air purifiers don't seem to emit enough ozone to cause concern in the typical, well-ventilated home, those models using an Ozonolysis process t clear pollutants from the air have been found to emit even more ozone, which can build up in poorly ventilated rooms to an excess of 350 billion parts per billion.

When measured outside, these levels would trigger a Stage 2 smog alert in most U.S. cities, something that hasn't even happened in southern California since the 1980's.

"These ozonolysis machines are insidious," warned Barbara Riordan, acting chairperson of the California Air Resource Board (ARB), in 2006. "They emit the same chemical that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been trying to eliminate from our air for decades."

Even more devastating, according to Riordan, is the fact that many people who already suffer from respiratory problems such as asthma and emphysema are voluntarily bringing this new danger into their homes, mistakenly believing that it will help their condition, not worsen it over time.

Making matters worse, the EPA has now officially stated in its literature that "ozone has been found to have little effect to remove indoor air pollutants," which may be making the use of these machines unnecessary anyway since science has yet to verify the authenticity of most manufacturer's claims regarding their products.

Until further research is completed, most experts agree that the safest thing to do is use a different kind of filtration cleaning system to rid your home of any indoor pollutants and allergens that may be causing your family discomfort.

She would come home from school and report that she had not felt sick during the day, however by dinner time she was sneezing and her eyes were watering again. People that I work with told me that this sounded like allergies. One of my co-workers that has allergies said that her symptoms were especially bad this spring.

This surprised me because she did not appear to have any of the visible symptoms that my daughter had. My co-worker said that her symptoms were under control through medication as well as the air purification system that we have in our office building.

I have never been bothered by allergies so I had not paid to much attention when the company announced 18 months ago that they were installing an air purification system. My co-worker said that this was great relief for her. She said that there was so much relief that she had one installed in her home.
I thought that this sounded like a good way of giving my daughter some relief. I made a doctors appointment for her and also went to my co-workers home to see the size and type of air purification system that she had purchased. I was surprised to see that the air purification system stood in the corner of their living room.

If I had not come over to specifically look at it, I would not have noticed it in the room. The air purification system was not very big and it was very quiet. My co-worker said that she had looked at several systems before purchasing the one she had in her home. Brief History of Ionic Purifier Development

1974 saw research emanating from the Swiss Meteorological Institute on why it was that people were negatively affected (e.g. headaches, depression, heart attacks) by various trade winds around the earth. Known winds such as the Sirocco in Italy, the Mistral in France, the Sharav in the Middle East and the Foehn in Switzerland were examined.

What came out of these studies was one common factor in all cases was the prevalence of a super high concentration of positively charged ions in the winds. Areas of recent rainfall or close to a waterfall were also found to contain largely negatively charged air-borne particles. Whilst positive ions detracted from a person's health, negative ions promoted health, benefits (e.g. increased plant and animal growth, improved animal relaxation and alertness) were seen above 1000 negative ions per cubic centimeter of air.

How modern Ionizing Air Purifiers Function

These devices are ionizing machines which charge passing air-borne particles so that they become negative (neutrally charged atoms or molecules gain one or more electrons) and settle on surfaces in the room. Out of the air column, these particles are then less likely to be inhaled and give people potential problems, e.g. allergic reactions or nausea.

Quick movements of people in rooms can create small movements of air capable of redistributing the settled particles back into the air. To counter this many ionizing purifiers house positively (neutrally charged atoms or molecules that have lost electrons) charged metal plates that attract the negatively ionized particles to them. You realize they may be right; perhaps the ionic air purifier isn't so bad. It's the use of the word "may" that might cause you concern. If there is a risk there in the first place, why play the odds with something as simple as an ionic air purifier?

In essence, the air purifier you are trusted and depended on to remove irritants from the air are not working. Your allergies or asthma are now irritating your lungs even more due to the ozone. While allergens are being removed, a new, possibly deadlier irritant is replacing the air you breathe. Why run an air purifier, specifically an ionic air purifier, if you are making the condition worse? Think about it! Why risk your life with an air purifier that might be making your symptoms worsen? It's a waste of your money. It is also a bigger risk in the long run.

Thus with the given reasons above, getting a HEPA air purifier might be a better choice. Although they are more expensive, these air purifiers help reduce allergens in the air without adding any potentially dangerous things to your environment that might harm you or your family.

Anyone with small children, pets, or a smoker in the house knows all too well that room deodorizers and air fresheners only mask the smell temporarily and don't solve your real air cleaning needs. In fact, many of them release toxic chemicals into the air (not good!).

To gain fresh, clean air, the odors in your home must be neutralized and cleaned completely. Odors like strong cooking smells, chemical fumes, and tobacco smoke are particularly dangerous for people suffering from asthma and allergies. As the air reaches the lungs, these bothersome odors and fumes trigger allergic reactions.

When deciding which air purifiers will be most effective against household odors, first consider the amount of air each air purifier can effectively process. The CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, is used to measure the overall effectiveness of an air purifier and is tested and certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

As air cycles through the air cleaner, the CADR measures the volume of air actually moving through the system, and the percentage and size of the particles being removed. CADR tests for pollutants like tobacco smoke, dust and pollen. These tests determine, in cubic feet per minute (CFM), how effective the air cleaner is at removing specific pollutants.

CADR results are recognized as accurate and impartial measurements by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Lung Association. Although some manufacturers use the air exchange rate to qualify their air cleaners, it is not comparable to the CADR tests. Air exchange rates only indicate the total volume of air that is processed by the air purifier in a given time and does not account for the particles being filtered or the overall effectiveness of the air purifier. Ensure that your air purifier has been tested and certified by the AHAM for optimal CADR results to guarantee that you will receive an air cleaner that has the ability to remove airborne contaminates, odors, and fumes.

Air purifiers utilize various methods of filtration for neutralizing and cleaning the awful odors in indoor air. Activated carbon filters are the most widely used type of filter to remove gases, odors, and chemical toxins. The carbon that is contained in activated carbon filters is basically charcoal. When charcoal is treated with oxygen, millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms are created, enabling the activated carbon to adsorb odorous substances from gases or liquids.

The term "adsorb" refers to the process by which the material attaches itself to the charcoals by way of chemical attraction. Large surface areas with tiny pores of activated charcoal attract odors, gases, and chemical toxins, and the pores trap these impurities. As the carbon filter becomes full with airborne contaminants, the charcoal becomes less effective, requiring replacement. Impregnated carbon filters contain an additional chemical (a chemisorbent), allowing them to eliminate Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as well as odors and fumes.

The carbon/zeolite filter is impregnated with potassium iodide for enhanced removal of chemically reactive gases, providing your home with air that's free of allergens, toxins, and odors.

Charged Media filters are also effective against nasty odors. Through the use of electrostatic energy and synthetic fiber filters, many charged media filters can collect particles as small as 0.1 microns. The media filter, made from synthetic fibers, is charged through the manufacturing process and attracts airborne contaminants electrostatically before trapping them inside the fibers of the filter.

However, charged media filters lose their charge frequently and become less effective after every use, requiring a filter replacement to regain efficiency. In fact, some charged media filters emit ozone, a dangerous lung irritant that pollutes your air and should be avoided by allergy and asthma sufferers.
